AClass ATOP RIG›
Combination vehicles, the highest level CDL. Truck plus trailer rated 26,001 lbs or more together, with the towed unit rated over 10,000 lbs. With the right endorsements a Class A also covers most Class B and C vehicles.
What it puts you in- Tractor-trailers: 18-wheelers, long-haul freight
- End dumps and belly dumps
- Flatbeds and lowboys hauling heavy equipment
- Tankers for fuel, chemicals or food-grade liquids (add N, or X for hazmat)
- Livestock carriers and grain hoppers
- Doubles and triples (add T)
BClass BHEAVY SINGLE›
One heavy vehicle on its own: rated 26,001 lbs or more, towing nothing heavier than 10,000 lbs.
What it puts you in- Box trucks and straight trucks: delivery, moving
- Dump trucks and cement mixers
- Garbage, utility and tow trucks
- City transit and school buses (add P, then S for school bus)
- Refrigerated trucks, shuttle and tour buses
CClass CSPECIALIZED›
A vehicle that does not meet Class A or B but still needs a CDL: built to carry 16 or more people including the driver, or hauling placarded hazardous materials.
What it puts you in- Shuttle vans and small buses (add P)
- Small hazmat delivery vehicles (add H)

Haul placarded hazmat. Knowledge test plus a TSA fingerprint and security screening, renewed on your state cycle. Federal hazmat training must recur every 3 years (49 CFR 172.704).

Drive tankers hauling liquid or gas loads: fuel, water, milk, chemicals. Liquid surge changes how the rig brakes and corners, and the knowledge test covers it.
