School bus in-service

REQUIRED 6 hours annual

Citation: Conn. Agencies Regs. § 14-276a-6; CGS § 14-276a

Administered by the CT DMV (not the DOE): to renew the S endorsement a driver must complete at least six hours of in-service training annually from an approved instructor or DMV-approved class, covering seasonal safety, student management, emergency procedures, and law updates (Conn. Agencies Regs. § 14-276a-6); a training certificate is submitted to DMV at renewal (§ 14-276a-2). Initial S endorsement requires a 10-hour pre-service program (4 hours for experienced/CDL holders, §§ 14-276a-3, -4), and S-endorsement renewal also requires passing the endorsement-specific proficiency/road test dated within one year.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 4 years.

No general CDL continuing-education requirement; CT CDLs renew every 4 years in person (CGS § 14-44h). The recurring S-endorsement road test at renewal is a notable CT-specific burden.

Hazmat: H endorsement requires the federal TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, 5-year cycle); no additional CT-specific fingerprinting quirk found.

  • S-endorsement renewal proficiency exam including road test (test dated within one year of renewal)
  • Towns/regional school districts may additionally require a safety training course of at least 10 hours behind-the-wheel plus 3 hours classroom (CGS § 14-276a(b)-(c))
  • Student transportation vehicle (STV) operators are covered by the same DMV training regulations
