School bus in-service

REQUIRED annual

Citation: Wash. Admin. Code § 392-144-102

OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) authorizes school bus drivers; every authorized driver must satisfactorily complete the annual school bus driver in-service training course between Aug 1 and Oct 31. Content and minimum time are set annually by the superintendent of public instruction (WAC 392-144-020 definition), so no fixed hour count appears in rule. Authorization lapses Nov 1 if the course is not completed and expires after two school years without completion.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 6 years.

No general recurring continuing-education requirement for CDL holders. Standard WA CDL renews every 6 years (enhanced CDL 8 years); interstate drivers must keep a current medical examiner's certificate on file with DOL.

Hazmat: TSA security threat assessment valid 5 years; DOL sets the license so it cannot expire after the TSA HME clearance expires, effectively tying CDL expiration to the hazmat clearance for HME holders. Hazmat knowledge test required at renewal.

  • OSPI school bus driver authorization system with its own initial training course and instructor program (WAC ch. 392-144)
  • In-service window is Aug 1 - Oct 31 each year; missing it lapses the authorization on Nov 1
