School bus in-service

REQUIRED 8 hours per semester (16 hours/school year; may be taken as 4 hours per quarter)

Citation: N.M. Admin. Code § 6.41.4.11(B)(2)

Rule text: 'To remain qualified, school bus drivers and/or bus assistants shall complete a total of eight hours in-service training per semester during the school year or four hours per quarter.' Administered under the Public Education Department's pupil transportation rule (6.41.4 NMAC); the state transportation director may set topics and the district transportation administrator documents completion. Drivers returning after 2+ years out must take an 8-hour refresher (min 2 hours behind the wheel) plus pro-rated in-service (12-16 hours total in the first year of re-employment).

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.

No general CDL continuing-education requirement beyond normal renewal. NM MVD issues CDLs for a 4-year or 8-year term at the holder's choice.

Hazmat: Standard federal TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based, 5-year cycle) applies for the H endorsement; no state-specific shorter cycle or extra state fingerprinting requirement found.

• Bus assistants must complete 16 hours of in-service each year plus current first aid/CPR certification (6.41.4.11(D))
• Transportation supervisors/administrators must complete a minimum of 2 hours of in-service annually (6.41.4.9(L), 6.41.4.10(D))
• Activity bus drivers must meet all school bus driver qualifications and the same in-service requirement
