School bus in-service
REQUIRED 3 hours annual
Citation: 280-RICR-30-05-2 (§§ 2.6, 2.7)
Administered by the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (Department of Revenue), not the Department of Education. Every School Bus Certificate expires June 30 each year; annual renewal requires a three (3) hour retraining course conducted by the Division or its designee plus a passing score on a written examination (§ 2.7). Initial applicants complete a 10-hour training course; the physical exam can be waived at renewal for drivers under 65 who previously filed one (§ 2.10).
CDL & endorsements
CDL renewal cycle: every 5 years.
No general CDL continuing education beyond renewal paperwork. RI CDLs are valid up to 5 years (2 years for drivers 70+).
Hazmat: Standard federal process: TSA Security Threat Assessment (~5-year cycle) plus hazmat knowledge test; no RI-specific hazmat renewal quirks surfaced in research.
