CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.

No general recurring continuing-education requirement for CDL holders beyond the 8-year renewal; federal ELDT applies one-time to new CDLs, upgrades, and first-time S/P/H endorsements.

Hazmat: Virginia is one of the states where hazmat fingerprinting/application is handled through the state DMV rather than a TSA enrollment center. TSA security threat assessment and the HME are valid 5 years; DMV mails a renewal notice ~90 days before HME expiration.

  • Driver trainers must hold instructor certification (8VAC20-70-411, -420)
  • In-service topics prescribed by regulation include drug/alcohol testing procedures and local transportation policies
