School bus in-service

REQUIRED 8 hours per 2 years (certificates expire July 31 of the second year)

Administered by the Mississippi Department of Education (Office of Safe and Orderly Schools, Pupil Transportation) using State Board of Education-approved courses. Initial certification requires a minimum 8-hour school bus driver training course; the certification card is valid for no more than 2 years (all certificates expire July 31 on a two-year cycle), and renewal requires an 8-hour recertification class (face-to-face, or online via an MDE School Bus Driver Instructor for drivers with 2+ years experience). Drivers with a chargeable accident may be ordered back to a full bus school regardless of card validity.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 5 years.

No general continuing education for ordinary CDL holders; Mississippi CDLs are issued for a 5-year term (Miss. Code § 63-1-211).

Hazmat: Standard federal process: TSA Security Threat Assessment (fingerprint-based) on a 5-year cycle via TSA enrollment centers; DPS may require the hazmat knowledge test again at CDL renewal. No separate state-run fingerprint program identified.
