School bus in-service

REQUIRED 8 hours annual (drops to every 2 years after 5+ years continuous experience with the current employer)

Citation: Haw. Admin. R. (HAR) § 19-143-7

Administered by the Hawaii Department of Transportation under HAR Title 19 ch. 143 (pupil transportation). Pre-service: employer must educate the driver on school bus laws/rules, the driver must pass a department examination with a minimum score of 78% and complete supervised route operation before transporting students. Refresher: an annual 8-hour department-approved in-service program (biennial for drivers with 5+ years continuous experience with their current employer); non-attendance results in revocation of school bus driving privileges.

CDL & endorsements

CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.

No general CDL continuing education beyond renewal. Hawaii CDLs are issued by county DMVs; validity is age-based (8 years for ages 25-71, shorter for younger/older drivers).

Hazmat: Federal TSA security threat assessment every 5 years. Hawaii limits CDLs with a hazmat (H/X) endorsement to a maximum 5-year validity instead of the standard 8 years.
