School bus in-service
REQUIRED annual
Citation: Iowa Admin. Code r. 281—43.32(285); Iowa Code § 321.376(2)
The Iowa Department of Education approves drivers' schools/classes of instruction. New drivers must successfully complete the department-approved 'new driver STOP class' within their first six months; all current school bus drivers must attend the annual course of instruction. A current driver who misses a year of instruction must complete the new-driver course before receiving an authorization. The administrative rule mandates annual attendance but does not state an hour count.
CDL & endorsements
CDL renewal cycle: every 8 years.
No general CDL continuing education beyond renewal; Iowa CDLs are valid 8 years for most drivers (shorter validity starting in the driver's 70s).
Hazmat: Federal TSA security threat assessment every 5 years, which is shorter than Iowa's 8-year CDL cycle, so H/X endorsement holders must recertify with TSA mid-license.
